fiona winzar architects transformed a typical victorian terrace home into a contemporary residence with an eye for sustainability. the eyelid house is located in melbourne, australia and now houses a family of five in a tight city lot. despite being nestled in a tight downtown location, the three-bedroom home has a very light filled interior. to add privacy, the architects created the roof extension that is shaped to mimic an eyelid, shielding the back façade from neighbours while still allowing light to enter. while the sharp angles of the extension are very modern, the clients also wanted to incorporate more decorative elements such as stained glass in a number of areas to keep the home relaxed. the materials used to build the new home were chosen to maximize sustainability and cost effectivness. in addition a rain water collection system was installed
along with solar hot water and gas heating.
